Luke 2:15-19

15So it was, when the angels had gone away from them into heaven, that the
shepherds said to one another, “Let us now go to Bethlehem and see this thing
that has come to pass, which the Lord has made known to us.” 16And they came
with haste and found Mary and Joseph, and the Babe lying in a manger. 17Now
when they had seen Him, they made
£widely known the saying which was told
them concerning this Child. 18And all those who heard it marveled at those things
which were told them by the shepherds. 19But Mary kept all these things and
pondered them in her heart.

  1. Mary pondered these things in her heart.

  1. God grants parents to walk along side a life and celebrate it!

  1. As Mary walked through the process, she catalogued the memories.

  1. Tammie retells the story around the birth of girls, at every one of their birthdays.

  1. God gives to children, a mentor!

Luke 2:41-50

41His parents went to Jerusalem every year at the Feast of the Passover. 42And when He was twelve years old, they went up to Jerusalem according to the
custom of the feast. 43When they had finished the days, as they returned, the Boy
Jesus lingered behind in Jerusalem. And
£Joseph and His mother did not know it;
44but supposing Him to have been in the company, they went a day’s journey,
and sought Him among their relatives and acquaintances. 45So when they did not
find Him, they returned to Jerusalem, seeking Him. 46Now so it was that after
three days they found Him in the temple, sitting in the midst of the teachers, both
listening to them and asking them questions. 47And all who heard Him were
astonished at His understanding and answers. 48So when they saw Him, they
were amazed; and His mother said to Him, “Son, why have You done this to us?
Look, Your father and I have sought You anxiously.”

49And He said to them, “Why did you seek Me? Did you not know that I must be about My Father’s business?” 50But they did not understand the statement, which He spoke to them.

  1. Mary genuinely cared for her son.

  1. She confronted, corrected and taught her son.

  1. Out of her passion for him.

  1. I wonder if she ever said to him, “Who do you think you are?

  1. She didn’t apologize for caring, and correcting.

  1. It was her place.

John 2:1-11

1On the third day there was a wedding in Cana of Galilee, and the mother of Jesus was there. 2Now both Jesus and His disciples were invited to the wedding. 3And when they ran out of wine, the mother of Jesus said to Him, “They have no wine.”

4Jesus said to her, “Woman, what does your concern have to do with Me? My hour has not yet come.”

5His mother said to the servants, “Whatever He says to you, do it.”

6Now there were set there six waterpots of stone, according to the manner of purification of the Jews, containing twenty or thirty gallons apiece. 7Jesus said to them, “Fill the waterpots with water.” And they filled them up to the brim. 8And He said to them, “Draw some out now, and take it to the master of the feast.” And they took it. 9When the master of the feast had tasted the water that was made wine, and did not know where it came from (but the servants who had drawn the water knew), the master of the feast called the bridegroom. 10And he said to him, “Every man at the beginning sets out the good wine, and when the guests have well drunk, then the inferior. You have kept the good wine until now!”

11This beginning of signs Jesus did in Cana of Galilee, and manifested His
glory; and His disciples believed in Him.

  • Mary knew here son and encouraged him in pursuing the will of God.

  1. She knew who HE was.

  1. 3 children, same parents, same house, different personalities!

  1. She encouraged him in pursuing God’s will for His life.

  1. As Jesus begins his ministry, It’s not strange that Mary is encouraging Him to step out!

Luke 8:19-21

19Then His mother and brothers came to Him, and could not approach Him because of the crowd. 20And it was told Him by some, who said, “Your mother and Your brothers are standing outside, desiring to see You.”

21But He answered and said to them, “My mother and My brothers are these who hear the word of God and do it.”

  1. Mary allowed the cord to be cut.

  1. Jesus is making a point about a relationship others can have with Him.

  1. Jesus stood undistracted.

  1. Don’t read more into this than there is.

  1. Jesus cares for His mother; we’ll see that later.

  1. As Jesus is standing up in fulfilling the Father’s will, Mary allows it, and doesn’t hoard in.

  1. I doubt if she played the martyr.

  1. I wonder if it blessed her, to see Jesus stand.

John 19:25-27

25Now there stood by the cross of Jesus His mother, and His mother’s sister, Mary the wife of Clopas, and Mary Magdalene. 26When Jesus therefore saw His mother, and the disciple whom He loved standing by, He said to His mother, “Woman, behold your son!” 27Then He said to the disciple, “Behold your mother!” And from that hour that disciple took her to his own home.

  1. Jesus honored his mother.

  1. Where is Joseph?

  1. Most commentators believe He had died by this time.

  1. But there at the cross of her son, is His mother.

  1. From the cross, Jesus says, “John, take care of her.”

  1. He also says, “Mom, let him take care of you.”
