The Wicked Heart
Psalm 36:1-12

1. Read Psalm 36:1-12

2. Pray

I. Righteous lessons learned from watching wickedness.

A. These are lessons that the righteous can observe from wicked men.

1. We can learn from all experiences and individuals.

2. “Men’s sins have a voice to godly ears.” (Spurgon)

B. These are not lessons to imitate, but to avoid.

1. Wicked actions confirm Righteous foundations.

II. Wickedness lessons taught:

A. Wickedness originates in the heart.

1. Matthew 15:18, 19

18But those things which proceed out of the mouth come from the heart, and they defile a man. 19 For out of the heart proceed evil thoughts, murders, adulteries, fornications, thefts, false witness, blasphemies.

2. Wickedness needs no example.

B. The wicked heart is ruled by his own wicked voice.

1. He flatters himself.

a. He believes he is in total control.

2. He deceives others to lead them astray.

C. The wicked meditates on wicked actions.

1. His private thoughts devise wicked plans.

2. These plans would not stand up to the light of day.

D. The wicked sets himself on the way of evil.

1. It is the way he devised.

III. Righteous lessons learned:

A. Wickedness begins when there is no fear of God.

1. Proverbs 1:7

The fear of the Lord is the beginning of knowledge,
But fools despise wisdom and instruction.

2. Proverbs 9:10-12

“The fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom,
And the knowledge of the Holy One is understanding.
11 For by me your days will be multiplied,
And years of life will be added to you.
12 If you are wise, you are wise for yourself,
And if you scoff, you will bear it alone.”

B. Righteousness begins by submitting personal authority to God.

1. Righteousness recognizes authority other than its own.

2. It yields to God’s instruction.

3. It yields to practices God’s presence.

a. Ephesians 5:16, 17

16 I say then: Walk in the Spirit, and you shall not fulfill the lust of the flesh. 17 For the flesh lusts against the Spirit, and the Spirit against the flesh; and these are contrary to one another, so that you do not do the things that you wish.
