In Ruth 1, Naomi returns to Bethlehem carrying the crushing weight of famine, displacement, widowhood, and the loss of her sons. In her grief, she tells the people not to call her Naomi, meaning “pleasant” or “my delight,” but Mara, meaning “bitter.” Her pain had begun to shape her identity and her view of God. Yet the very next verse still calls her Naomi. God does not accept the name bitterness gives her; He continues to see her as His delight. This message reminds us that bitterness is a subtle poison that can distort our perception of life, others, and even God Himself. But God sees from an eternal perspective. What Naomi saw as emptiness, God was weaving into redemption, provision, family, and ultimately the lineage of Jesus Christ. Through thankfulness, honest surrender, and faith in Christ’s healing power, we can bring our bitterness to the Lord and trust Him to exchange ashes for beauty, mourning for joy, and despair for praise.
